THEY'RE HERE! The first of
the 2008 Madone 5.1 WSD (Women Specific Bicycle) models have arrived
in our stores. Very limited quantities of 52, 54 & 56cm so far; the
47 & 50cm sizes might not arrive until the end of the year.
But for those 5'4 & taller, this is
the road bike. You can
read all about what makes this new bicycle so wonderful to ride,
but better yet, come in and ride one yourself.
The bike shown in the photo sports a
few options available for any of our bikes; pink Bontrager cushioned
handlebar tape, pink Bontrager bottle cages and pink Speedplay
pedals.

stuff; another $200 or so including the bottle cages & pedals shown
(for the time being, we're building them up with pink bar tape at no
extra cost, but if you prefer the stock black tape, that's fine
too). Pink accessories or not, this bike has a lot going for it,
which means you're going to enjoy riding more comfortably, more
efficiently, and more often, because you're not going to be able to
walk past your Madone WSD without wanting to ride it, every chance

| WHY SPECIAL BIKES FOR
WOMEN? Half of the world are
women, yet their bike choices are few & far between compared to what
men get. That was then, this is now. Trek was the first full-line
bike company to devote significant resources to building bikes right
for women, and they remain #1 in the business for good reason. Great
bikes, great value, and an attention to detail that goes beyond just
hanging a "women's" saddle and shorter stem onto a guy's bike and
saying it's the women's version.
PINK! Awesome! Yuck! Everybody has an opinion. In previous
years, many of the WSDs were quite proudly pink. More pink than many
women wanted, and a huge hit with others. For 2008, Trek is going to
be a bit more subtle, not abandoning pink altogether, but using it
more sparingly as an accent color.

FEATURES COMMON TO ALL WSD MODELS
It's the frame and wheels that make the difference!
In order to properly fit riders, particularly women with
shorter arms & torsos, TREK has built the smallest-sized frame
(43cm) with special
650c wheels (about two inches smaller than normal). This
allows for a shorter distance from the seat to the handlebars, which
with full-size 700c wheels must be quite a bit longer so that the
pedals don't hit the front wheel when turning. WSD bikes
now come in five sizes too; 43, 47, 51,54 & 57cm.
The result is that you can finally have a comfortable and efficient
fit...no longer will you be so stretched out that you associate
riding a bike with pain! You'll ride further, faster, and more
enjoyably than ever before. And TREK hasn't forgotten the smaller
details, either...like a special woman's seat that relieves
pressure on the sensitive areas that come into contact with the
front of the saddle...and narrower handlebars in the event
you don't have shoulders like a football player.
One more very important item unique to
these bikes...ALL have carbon-fiber forks, even the
least-expensive Trek 1000. Why? Because carbon-fiber has an incredible ability to dampen
vibration, improving both handling and comfort. This is even
more important for a bike with a smaller frame and wheels, since
smaller components generally flex less than their larger
counterparts...meaning that, ironically, most women's bikes ride
more harshly than a standard-sized (mens, unisex, whatever you want
to call it) model. Not these bikes! If you're looking at any
other small road bike (one with 650c wheels), make sure it has a
carbon-fiber fork.
Will all women benefit from one of
these bikes? The basic criteria is for women 5'10"
or shorter, and especially those with relatively short arms &
torsos. If you're taller than 5'10", or between 5'1" and 5'7"
but with relatively longer arms & torsos, fit might be better on a
conventional (unisex?) bike, probably with the stock handlebar stem
exchanged for one that features a taller rise and shorter forward
reach...along with a woman's saddle.
And where should you buy a TREK WSD

Actually, the answer isn't that simple, since a great number of
visitors to our website live hundreds, if not thousands of miles
away from us. If you live close by, you'll benefit from buying
from us because we fit each and every rider to their bike using the
Fit-Kit sizing system, which helps determine not only frame size but
perhaps even more importantly recommends what size & angle of
handlebar stem to use. You'll also benefit from our continued
efforts to make sure you're comfortable on your bike, even including
free stem exchanges well after you've purchased your bike.
Plus, free minor adjustments for as long as you own your bike.
Why do we do all this? Because we want your bike to decorate
you, not your garage. And finally, you'll benefit from our
continued sense of "ownership" of your bike, long after
you've purchased it. If it's one of our bikes, and it does
something it's not supposed to, we take care of it. We even
turn down profitable service opportunities on bikes we haven't sold
because of our obligation to keep the bikes we have sold on the
road.
But what if you don't live near Chain
Reaction? When shopping for a bike, keep in mind you're
also shopping for a bike shop. Ask yourself if they understand
your needs, or seem to be pitching today's special? How do
they assure that the bike fits you? And, very importantly, ask
yourself if the shop is the sort of place you'll feel comfortable
bringing the bike back to if something's not quite right (One of
our informal mottos is- "We won't run away if you bring your
bike in the door in two pieces. We might cringe, but we won't
run away!). Keep in mind that these items are far more
important than a $50 difference in price, since the most expensive
bike you can buy is the one you don't use because it's not quite
right.
